Indonesia is not experiencing an endemic Zika virus
Indonesian Ministry of Health
Jakarta, 20 June 2016
Press Release – Unofficial translation

INDONESIA IS NOT EXPERIENCING ACTIVE ZIKA VIRUS TRANSMISSION

PRESS RELEASE

23 June 2016

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has confirmed that Indonesia is not experiencing an endemic local transmission of the Zika virus. Please refer to the Indonesian Ministry of Health release: the English translation in the following page of this release and in Bahasa Indonesia at http://www.depkes.go.id/article/view/16062100002/indonesia-bukan-negara-endemis-ataupun-daerah-tertular-zika.html

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its 15 June 2016 release reported that Indonesia is not among the countries experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015. Please refer to the WHO’s release at http://www.who.int/emergencies/zika-virus/situation-report/16-june-2016/en/

Local and national health authorities together with the community and members of the public throughout Indonesia including Bali have been taking vigorous steps to prevent the spread of the Zika vector (the type of mosquito that can spread Zika).

International travelers in Indonesia, like in many other tropical countries, are exposed to mosquito-borne viruses. We urge holidaymakers to take adequate protection against mosquito bites.

Indonesia is not experiencing an endemic Zika virus

Indonesian Ministry of Health

Jakarta, 20 June 2016

Press Release – Unofficial translation

Indonesia is not among the 46 countries experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015. Indonesia is not among the 14 countries that have reported evidence of Zika virus transmission as stated by dr. Mohammad Subuh, Director General for Prevention and Control of Disease, Ministry of Health of Indonesia.

This statement is consistent with the WHO data on Zika transmission. In its 15 June 2016 release, the WHO reported that 60 countries and territories report continuing mosquito-borne transmission. Furthermore, the WHO reported that 46 countries are experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015, with no previous evidence of circulation, and with ongoing transmission by mosquitos. In addition, 14 countries reported evidence of Zika virus transmission between 2007 and 2014, with ongoing transmission.

Moreover, the WHO reported that four countries or territories have reported evidence of Zika virus transmission between 2007 and 2014, without ongoing transmission: Cook Islands, French Polynesia, ISLA DE PASCUA – Chile and YAP (Federated States of Micronesia). In the week to 15 June 2016, no new country reported mosquito-borne or person-to-person Zika virus transmission.

The Zika virus was first detected in the saliva of monkeys in Uganda. It was detected as part of the yellow-fever monitoring program in 1947. In 1952, the Zika virus was reported to infect humans in Uganda and Tanzania.
