{tab Purpose}

This visa allows you to conduct scientific research in Indonesia.

Before applying for visa at the Embassy, the applicant must first submit an application for a research permit to the State Ministry of Research and Technology. Please visit the Ministry’s website https://frp.ristekdikti.go.id the procedure and requirements to obtain foreign research permit.

Once a research permit is granted, the applicant will receive an authorization letter issued by the Directorate General of Immigration. Within two months after the issuance of the letter, you should submit a visa application to the nominated Indonesian Mission (Embassy/Consulate).

Please note that the Embassy will not issue a visa without the authorization letter from the Immigration. Applicants are suggested not to submit a visa application to the Embassy if the research permit has not been received.

  1. A passport that has at least three blank pages, with at least 12 month’s validity (for 6-month stay); 18 month’s validity ( for 1-year stay).
  2. A completed and signed application form.
  3. One recent colour passport-sized photograph (attached to the application form).
  4. Authorization letter from the Directorate General of Immigration.
  5. A recommendation letter from the Office Education and Cultural Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra.

  1. A copy of two-way/ingoing and outgoing tickets.
  2. A research proposal that contains at least: title, abstract, objectives, methodology, location, and duration of the research in Indonesia.
  3. Curriculum Vitae.
  4. Letter of recommendation from: [a] professor or researcher supervisor and [b] official of the institution or university where the researcher(s) employed.
  5. Letter of support from the Indonesian counterpart.
  6. A letter guaranteeing sufficient funds to cover for conducting research in Indonesia.
  7. Non-refundable visa fee: AU$ 80 (single entry) and AU$ 235 (1 year) per 1 July 2019. Payment can be made by EFTPOS or credit card at the Indonesian Embassy. For application by mail, payment must be made by Money Order payable to “the Indonesian Embassy”. Cash or cheque will not be accepted.

  1. Application by mail must enclose a self-addressed return envelope (preferably by Platinum Post or courier services).  It is the responsibility of the applicants to retain the tracking numbers of the return envelope. The Embassy is not liable for the delays or loss of any documents sent by mail. Please note that we do not provide information on delivery status, and recommend you check the status with the Australia Post.
  2. Only after the Embassy has received a completed visa application form, can the Embassy start with the visa issuance process. The visa process will take approximately 8 - 10 working days from the date of acceptance of the document by the Embassy. The process may take longer when the application requires approval/ authorization from relevant authorities in Indonesia. An Indonesia visa will be issued to an applicant, when all of the requirements have been met and if the issuance is considered to be appropriate.
  3. The Research Visa issued by The Embassy is a single entry visa. However, the visa holder could exit and re-enter Indonesia multiple times by applying for exit permit at the nearest immigration office.
  4. Please note that the visa that has been granted must be used within 90 days after its issuance date. Therefore, we encourage you to lodge your visa application not more than 90 days and at least 14 (fourteen) working days before your intended day of departure.

  5. Please be informed that the immigration office at the airport has the authority to decide whether a person is allowed to enter Indonesia.

Pursuant to the Decree of Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia No. M.HH-02.GR.01.06 year 2017, Nationals of the following countries requires authorization from the Indonesian Immigration Head Office prior to the issuance of a visa:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Guinea
  3. Israel
  4. Liberia
  5. Nigeria
  6. North Korea
  7. Somalia

are advised to apply for an Electronic Visa (E-Visa) before travelling to Indonesia. The E-visa must be applied online through the following address https://visa-online.imigrasi.go.id/.

This E-Visa application must be submitted by a guarantor based in Indonesia. Please contact a registered migration agent in Indonesia to assist with this calling visa inquiry.

  • Authorization/approval letter from the Indonesian Immigration Head Office in Jakarta. The procedures for obtaining the said letter are stated below.
  • Completed visa application form.
  • Original passport with a minimum of 6 (six) months validity from the date of entry in Indonesia.
  • One copy of the passport.
  • One copy of a valid Australian visa.
  • Applicants need to have a sponsor in Indonesia and provide letter from the said sponsor stating the purpose of the visit.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the intended period of stay in Indonesia (latest 2 months bank statement).
  • Once the visa has been approved, payment of visa fee AUD80.00 and telex fee AUD 21.00 may be made in form of EFTPOS or credit card. For application by mail, payment must be made by Money Order payable to the Indonesian Embassy.
  • One passport size recent colour photographs.
  • One copy of Australia ID Card.

Procedures for Authorization/approval letter from Immigration Head Office in Jakarta

  • Submit all the above-mentioned documents to the Embassy of the Republic of Canberra.
  • The Embassy will transmit the request to the Immigration Head Office in Jakarta.
  • Applicant must contact their sponsor to proceed with the procedures in Jakarta. Sponsor must present themselves in person at the Immigration Head Office in Jakarta, with the following supporting documents: a copy of applicant’s passport, supporting letter from the sponsor, and 3 photographs of the applicant.

  • After the Authorization/approval letter has been received, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra will issue the visa and release it to the applicant. The Embassy requires a minimum of 1 (one) month to process the application, depend on the Clearing House process in Jakarta.
